The
Decals |
| |
A combination of diverse musical elements and a variety
of musicians is what gives The Decals its unique flare
and appeal. A little something for just about everyone
is a good ways to describe the music. You'll hear
elements of funk, reggae, R&B, classic rock, African
high-life, blues, Jazz and country. Sometimes many
of these elements will be within a single song.
Formed
in 1997 by guitarist Kevin Johnson as a traditional
ska band, The Decals have since evolved into a much
more broadened musical entity. The current lineup
consists of guitar, bass, drums, 2 keyboards and 2
(sometimes 3) horns. All band members contributes
vocally. The band's original music captures the most
diversity. For example, in many of the vocals, isorhythmis
14th century style harmonies can be heard. This bizarre
mixture of contemporary pop and medieval elements
along with various elements of different cultural
origins shows that such diversity can be blended to
yield a truly great product. The cover songs reveal
how well known songs were either influenced by other
cultures, or can easily cross over into other cultural
styles because they share some common characteristics.
Regardless the end result is an energetic creation
of a fun positive party atmosphere that draws the
crowd to the dance floor.

Ambelique
Following
in the footsteps of Gregory Issacs, John Holt, Ken
Booth, Beres Hammond, Freddie McGregor, and Dennis
Brown. Ambelique has now joined that selective group
of artists from Jamaica who sing and perform deep
soulful reggae the way it should be done
There's an old saying 'nothing happens before its
time'. It could have been coined especially for Ambelique,
who despite his wealth of current hits and rocketing
popularity among grassroots enthusiasts, waited patiently
for his breakthrough into the reggae big time. Then
again, Ambelique is no ordinary singer. His tones
of expressions and vocal technique are simple outstanding,
and the soul in his voice so moving at times, the
listener is reminded of early R&B greats such
as Sam Cooke.
Jamaican by Birth, he was raised in the Waltham Park
area of Kingston, the same neighbourhood that gave
us Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minot and
The Stewart Brothers (Tinga & Roman). It was ska
and Rock steady Legend Derrick Harriot who took him
to the Studio for the first time.

Carlos
Jones
It
sounds very simple, we all try to attain it, in
fact, come people have called it the "golden
rule," but Carlos Jones has made it a way of
life. Be and his band P.L.U.S. (Peace, Love &
Unity Syndicate) are focusing on the teachings,
beliefs and way of life of the restafarlan, the
philanthropic and the saint. Not professing to be
a resta himself, rather a "man of the universe,"
Jones has, through music, been expressing his own
philosophies as well as those of resta elders, teachers
and guides such as Bob Marley, through his own special
hybrid of African, traditional Jamaican, soul and
calypso music. However quick Jones is to admit that
he is not a rastafarian, he is also quick to add
that although he agrees with many of their philosophies,
he has many of his own beliefs that deviate from
the ideas that they adhere to.
In
addition to Jones on lead vocals, guitar and percussion,
P.L.U.S. also includes Bob Caruso, on conga, percussion;
Bush Doctor, on guitar, percussion and vocals; Peter
Platten on keyboards and vocals, Roy Lsaacs on percussion
and vocals. Only Caruso is also a member of First
Light, the rest of band though, have been friends
for some time and have worked together on many occasions.
